“There’s a lot of implement companies out there that are really innovative,” Craig explains, “and what’s stopping them from instrumenting or creating technology on their implements is just the proprietary nature of agriculture today.”

“I don’t think autonomy, even though I love autonomy and we’re pushing for it, I don’t think it’s an all or nothing proposition,” Craig notes. This insight led to their modular approach – creating systems that could be installed on existing tractors in about four hours.

Creating Network Effects

The platform strategy created opportunities for network effects in an industry where they traditionally didn’t exist. By making their system compatible with multiple tractor models and encouraging third-party innovation, Sabanto created a virtuous cycle: more compatibility leads to more users, which attracts more developers, which creates more value for users.

This approach was particularly powerful because, contrary to popular belief, farmers are eager adopters of useful technology. As Craig points out, “There’s this misnomer out there that farmers and people have this picture of farmers in their mind, like they’re not very technically adept or they’re technically inept, but that is so far from the truth. They’re some of the more progressive technology adopting people you will ever meet.”

The platform strategy isn’t just about current technology – it’s about preparing for the future of farming. With one-third of U.S. farmers over 65, the industry faces significant demographic challenges.
