Level AI’s Framework for Building in Noisy Markets: Focus on the Unchangeable

In an AI market where new models and capabilities emerge weekly, how do you build lasting value? In a recent episode of Category Visionaries, Level AI founder Ashish Nagar shared a counterintuitive framework: focus on what won’t change.

The Bezos Principle “One thing which Jeff talks about is ask yourself in your particular space what will not change in the next ten years,” Ashish explains. “If you ask that, the business strategy becomes really simple.” This principle, learned during his time at Amazon, became foundational to Level AI’s approach.

Finding the Constants For Amazon, the unchanging elements were clear: “People will always want low prices. People will always wanted to get things delivered fast, no matter what the technology, underlying technology is.” For Level AI, the constants were equally fundamental: businesses need to understand and improve their customer interactions, regardless of the specific technology used.

Beyond the AI Arms Race While competitors rushed to announce new AI features, Level AI took a different approach. “We are in no, we are AI and not AI or whatever it takes to win customer camp,” Ashish notes. This flexibility allowed them to focus on solving real problems rather than chasing technology trends.

The Reality of Enterprise Needs Most enterprises care about results, not technology labels. As Ashish observes: “Often customers don’t even know the difference between the two. And I’m not saying because they are ill informed, it’s just because it’s not their job.” This insight helped Level AI craft more effective value propositions.

Building for Long-term Impact Looking ahead, Ashish predicts: “If I had to pick a number, somewhere between 50% to 70% of the work would still be done by humans.” This realistic view of AI’s role shapes their product strategy – focusing on augmentation rather than replacement.

From Noise to Signal “The Twitter noise doesn’t really impact them,” Ashish notes about their customers. “What impacts them is, again, like, can you solve my problem for which I have $100,000 budget any better than anybody else.” This focus on practical value over hype has helped Level AI build credibility in the enterprise market.

The Scale of Opportunity The potential impact is massive – there are 5 million Americans working in customer service. Level AI’s vision isn’t about replacing these workers but “improve their quality of life by 20%, 30%, 50%.” This focus on enduring human needs provides a north star amid technological change.

Lessons for B2B Founders For founders building in noisy markets, Level AI’s framework offers crucial guidance: identify the constants in your market, build for enduring needs rather than temporary trends, and focus on delivering practical value over chasing the latest technology buzzwords.

This approach requires discipline, especially when competitors are generating buzz with their latest AI features. But by focusing on what won’t change, companies can build lasting value while others chase ephemeral trends.
