Inside Reseed’s Data Strategy: Turning Farm Data into Multiple Revenue Streams

Most AgTech companies collect farm data for a single purpose. Reseed took the opposite approach, building multiple revenue streams from the same data foundation. In a recent Category Visionaries episode, founder Josh Knauer revealed their innovative data monetization strategy.

The Core Data Asset Reseed’s platform starts with a simple premise: help farmers collect and verify their environmental impact data. As Josh explains, they provide farmers with “an app that we provide to them, and turning that data into carbon credits and other products that corporations and governments and individuals need in order to achieve climate goals.”

Beyond Carbon Credits While carbon credits were the initial focus, Reseed quickly identified additional market opportunities. “We’re marketing actually a bunch of different data products from different farmers to markets. Think supply chain information, think the EU has a deforestation regulation that’s taking the world by storms,” Josh notes. This diversification creates multiple revenue streams from the same data collection effort.

Building Verification Systems Reseed’s competitive advantage comes from their verification methodology. “We are literally the first company in the world to create a carbon credit measuring protocol for active agricultural land in very small places,” Josh explains. This protocol became the foundation for multiple data products.

Creating Financial Products The company’s verified data has attracted financial institutions. “We are working right now with financing vehicles… that are basically starting to use our carbon credits as the base asset of their funds and are projecting… twelve to 15% to 20% annual returns for their investors,” Josh shares. This transforms agricultural data into investable assets.

Scaling Through Standards Reseed’s expansion strategy relies on open standards. “Starting now… what we need is open and transparent and auditable data being collected, and documenting what the climate actions are and justifying why it’s a credit.” This approach allows for rapid market expansion while maintaining data quality.

Market Impact The platform’s success has highlighted a massive market inefficiency: “less than 1%, in fact, it’s 0.03% of carbon credits on the market today come from farming or agriculture in any form.” By creating multiple revenue streams from farm data, Reseed is helping change this dynamic.

For B2B founders, Reseed’s approach offers valuable lessons about data monetization. Instead of building single-purpose solutions, consider how your core data assets could serve multiple markets. As Josh demonstrates, the key is creating robust verification systems that enable various use cases from the same data foundation.
