The aviation industry stands at a crossroads, facing mounting pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. As airlines and manufacturers grapple with this challenge, innovative companies like CleanJoule are paving the way for sustainable air travel.

Mukund Karanjikar, CEO of CleanJoule, offers unique insights into the complexities of aviation decarbonization. “We made our life’s mission to decarbonize the planet. Let’s start with aviation as an industry,” he states, highlighting the sector’s critical role in global emissions.

The Challenge of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

At the heart of aviation decarbonization lies sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Karanjikar explains the hurdle: “What you want to do is you are already solving a very hard problem, which is can I make new type of hydrocarbons and compete with an extremely efficient industry called oil and gas because the planet is heating up and climate change is important.”

CleanJoule’s approach to SAF development addresses a key industry concern – infrastructure compatibility. “You go to them and you say, I do not want you to change anything. Just buy a different barrel of the fuel. It’s fully infrastructure compatible end to end,” Karanjikar notes, emphasizing the importance of seamless integration.

Industry-Wide Collaboration

Decarbonizing aviation isn’t a solo mission. Karanjikar stresses the need for ecosystem development: “The regulators have some role to play. They have to move slightly faster as entrepreneurs are moving.” He also points to the crucial involvement of the “liquids industry,” including oil and gas companies, pipeline companies, and refiners.

Airlines are stepping up too. CleanJoule’s funding round includes investments from three airlines – Volaris, Frontier, and Wizz Air – demonstrating the industry’s commitment to sustainable solutions.

Timeline for Implementation

While the challenge is immense, progress is tangible. Karanjikar outlines CleanJoule’s timeline: “Come 2028, 2029, you will find at the corner station, the proverbial corner station, CleanJoule SAF for sale, that any airline can power it at any airport that they would want.”

This projection offers hope for significant carbon reduction in aviation within the next decade.

Beyond Carbon: The Broader Impact

CleanJoule’s vision extends beyond just reducing airline carbon emissions. Karanjikar explains, “We are looking at lifting millions and millions of people around the planet who are on the rural side of the world out of poverty forever.” By using biomass feedstocks, SAF production could stimulate rural economies worldwide.

The Road Ahead

The path to aviation decarbonization is complex, requiring technological innovation, regulatory support, and industry-wide collaboration. However, with companies like CleanJoule leading the charge, sustainable air travel is becoming an achievable reality.

As the industry moves towards its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, SAF will play a crucial role. Karanjikar’s ultimate vision? “We are after making aviation 100% sustainable… we want to go at some point after that real zero, which is not net zero where we are seeking credits elsewhere.”

The journey to decarbonize aviation is just beginning, but with determined innovators and industry-wide commitment, the skies of tomorrow look cleaner and greener.
